Cheltenham: Selections for Thursday

Thursday's seven-race program offers a mix of races with short-priced favorites who look difficult to beat and several wide-open handicaps in which as many as a dozen runners hold appeal. Here's a glance at selections:

Race 1 - novice chase, 2 1-2 miles - Invitation Only (4) will be a slight favorite, but support goes to Terrefort (9), the likely second choice who has won his last two races. Terrefort can handle soft turf - the going on Thursday - and is tactical and may stalk Invitation Only.

Race 2 - handicap hurdle, 3 miles - Only 23 runners in this field, which will cover two circuits of this undulating track. Two horses to mention - Sykes (8) and Dell' Arca (6). Sykes has been second in his last two starts on soft turf and should handle the distance. Sykes was 18-1 this morning with Ladbrokes. Dell' Arca won here in November and is capable of a surprise at a decent price.

Race 3 - Ryanair Chase, 2 5-8 miles - Un De Sceaux (7), the 2017 winner, looks formidable against five rivals. He can be handy for jockey Paul Townend, a replacement for an injured Ruby Walsh who is out for several weeks with a leg injury sustained on Wednesday.

Race 4 - Stayers' Hurdle, 3 miles - In a field of 16, Supasundae (8) is preferred over expected favorite Sam Spinner (7). Supasundae should prefer the soft turf but has distance questions. Sam Spinner has won his last two starts and tends to set the pace. He could face pressure in this field.

Race 5 - handicap chase, 2 5-8 miles - In a field of 23, Oldgrangewood (7) is worth a bet as a 22-1 shot, his price on Thursday morning. Oldgrangewood won his last start and does not carry too much weight - 158 pounds, compared to topweight Village Vic (1) at 166. The Storyteller (6) Movewitthetimes (13) and King's Socks (16) figure to be among the favorites, at about 7-1.

Race 6 - mares' novices hurdle, 2 1-8 miles - Laurina (2) has won her last two starts for the powerful Irish trainer Willie Mullins and has been prepared for this for months. Her prices reflects that. She was 3-5 this morning.

Race 7 - handicap chase 3 1-4 miles (for amateur riders) - In a field of 21, Band of Blood (18) will have no trouble with the distance with wins in his last two starts at three miles. The surface should not be a problem. He won on heavy turf at Exeter last month. He was 9-1 this morning.
