Prior to today's Jeff Ruby Steaks card, West Coast-based jockey Drayden Van Dyke was winless in two starts at Turfway Park, with both coming during the 2015 Spiral Stakes card.
Van Dyke picked up a third-place effort in today's fourth race aboard 2-1 favorite True Boots and booted home his first winner at the track in Race 5 aboard True Dream.
As we approach the stakes portion of the Jeff Ruby program, Van Dyke is aboard #6 Road to Damascus in R7, the Rushaway Stakes; #7 Chip Leader in the Kentucky Cup Classic, #2 Consolida in the Grade 3 DRF Bets Bourbonette Oaks, and #7 Hazit in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks.
Here is what Van Dyke had to say about Turfway's surface conditions today...
"The weather condition could be better, but of course, I'm spoiled from California. I think it's all about if your horse handles the course, and this horse I just rode for Kenny McPeek (True Dream) handled it really nice. Even though I was pretty wide, she was galloping along and she was happy. From about the half-mile pole home, I just let her run. They have to like it."
On how the Polytrack at Turfway plays compared to the Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields...
"The kickback is way worse than what I expected. At Golden Gate, it's like throwing a little piece of grass at you. Here, it kind of feels like rocks. Of course, it is colder. That's the difference."
