A plane carrying American-based horses from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Dubai for the March 31 Dubai World Cup program is scheduled to depart Tuesday night, and barring last-minute defections, there figure to be 15 horses traveling for this year’s races.
Five are going in the $10 million Dubai World Cup, including certain favorite West Coast, who could give trainer Bob Baffert his fourth World Cup win and second in a row following Arrogate’s unforgettable victory in 2017. Baffert has a second runner, Mubtaahij, who will be joined by Forever Unbridled, Gunnevera, and Pavel.
There are three Americans – probably the three favorites – for the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen headed by champion Roy H and 2017 Shaheen winner Mind Your Biscuits. X Y Jet, trained by Jorge Navarro, also is Golden Shaheen bound, but Navarro had to withdraw the early favorite for the $1 million Godolphin Mile, Sharp Azteca, because of a minor injury. The only American in that race is Economic Model, who would be trainer Chad Brown’s first Dubai starter.
There are four Americans – Stormy Liberal, Richard’s Boy, Conquest Tsunami, and Holding Gold – for the $1 million Al Quoz Sprint, a straight-course, 1200-meter turf dash. Peter Miller three of those horses, while Holding Gold will be trainer Mark Casse’s first Dubai runner.
Run Time, trained by Mike Maker, will take a shot in the 3200-meter (about two miles) Gold Cup, while Reride is headed to the $2 million UAE Derby.
The horses are quarantined for 48 hours after arrival but can exercise on a small trotting ring at the quarantine facility before they are cleared to train during specific windows on the Meydan main track and main turf track or the training track, which has both all-weather and turf courses available for exercise.
