Longden ($4.40) survived an inquiry to win Thursday's sixth race for 3-year-old maidens continuing a trend of success in that category for trainer Bob Baffert's powerhouse stable.
Longden is Baffert's 13th maiden special weight winner of the meeting, which began on Dec. 26. Baffert leads the trainer's standings with 29 wins, one more than Peter Miller.
Longden won a race at 1 1-16 miles by 2 1-4 lengths over 18-1 Formal Dude. The stewards reviewed an incident on the backstretch where Longden bumped repeatedly with 21-1 Negro Lucero when both runners appeared to be positioned for the same gap between the leaders.
There are several familiar names among Baffert's 3-year-old maiden race winners at this meeting. In chronological order, the winners have been Ax Man (Jan. 1), Emboldened (Jan. 5), Nero (Jan. 13), Cognitive (Jan. 26), Restoring Hope (Feb. 2), Curly's Rocket (Feb. 3), Masked (Feb. 10), Ike (Feb. 11), Justify (Feb. 18), Call West (March 10), McKale (March 10), Once on Whiskey (Saturday) and Longden.
