Jessica Alexandra has run some of her best races from the rail and she will break from the post Saturday in the $187,916 West Texas Derby for Quarter Horses at Sunland Park.
Jessica Alexandra is part of a 10-horse field for the 400-yard race. The fastest qualifier, Believe Me Irene, did not return in the finale Saturday. For complete entries for the race, and the card at Sunland: http://www.drf.com/race-entries/track/SUN/country/USA/date/03-31-2018
Jessica Alexandra's last win came after she broke from the rail in a trial for the Hobbs America Futurity last fall at Zia Park. She returned to run second in the finale. Jessica Alexandra was beaten a neck in her West Texas Derby trial after a less than perfect start and she could be sitting on a peak race here, in her third out since December.
He Be Flashy looks like another leading contender after running second to Believe In Irene in his West Texas Derby trial March 9. He covered 400 yards in 19.44 seconds, the time the quickest among all those that have returned for the finale Saturday.
Sunland also is racing on Sunday.
