The racetrack closed for training 2 hours earlier than normal, at 8:00 a.m. this morning, but not before several promising 3-year-olds turned in works for upcoming Kentucky Derby preps. The majority of those workers came from the barn of Dale Romans, who sent out a trio of Derby hopefuls to work five furlongs from the half-mile pole. Tiz Mischief was the first to go, completing the distance into the clubhouse turn in 1:01.41 before galloping out six panels in 1:!4.06. Free Drop Billy was up next, covering five panels in 1:01.78 and out in 1:14.46 under a bit more pressure. He, in turn, was followed by the Wood Memorial bound King Zachary, the least impressive of the three, five-eighths in 1:01.01 while put to heavy pressure to the wire and beyond then up six furlongs in 1:14.76. Romans also had C.S. Incharge, who scratched out of the Gulfstream Park Oaks, breeze five-eighths in an average 1:03.67.
The bullet work for five furlongs on Saturday went to the Anthony Quartarolo trained Machismo, who is expected to run next in the Blue Grass. Machismo, an impressive maiden winner in his last start, got the distance in 58.78 but was under a hard drive from the top of the stretch to the wire and still unable to run down his workmate, who broke several lengths in front and maintained a 1 1/2 length margin at the finish line while going easiest of the pair at the end.
