Keeneland vice president Bob Elliston said this morning that track officials have been holding meetings to discuss the "multiple scenarios" that could develop overnight Friday into Saturday. A wintry mixture of snow and rain is in the forecast for that time period, along with sub-freezing temperatures.
"This is still baking, but there've been meetings already among the track and maintenance crews, the racing office, and the administration to discuss all the various scenarios," said Elliston. "Our No. 1 priority, as always, will be the safety and welfare of the people riding and the animals themselves. That will not be compromised.
"Working back from that, Saturday is a very important race day, and obviously we would like to fulfill our obligations of running the card if at all possible. We are closely monitoring the amount and timing of the snow that's supposed to come down and how we will handle it. Again, if there's any question about the safety of the racing surface, we won't take a shot, but otherwise, we will do everything we can to make this a go."
The Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes, a key Kentucky Derby prep that has GOOD MAGIC as the morning-line favorite in a full field of 14, is one of five graded stakes on an 11-race Saturday card. First post daily is 1:05 ET.
The forecast for Friday, opening day of the 16-day spring meet, calls for rain and a high of 60, and there seems very little possibility of weather imperling that 10-race card being held as scheduled.
