Rafael Hernandez found the mark five times on the 10-race opening day card, including on reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Pink Lloyd in his track-record-breaking performance in the six-furlong Jacques Cartier Stakes.
Hernandez should give perennial Woodbine leading rider Eurico Da Silva a run for his money this year. Da Silva is serving a suspension during the first seven racing days of the meet.
Norm McKnight was last year's leading trainer at Woodbine in wins, without a stakes success. However, he got one in the supporting feature, the $102K Wando, with Inge, who got the money after Machtree was disqualifed for interference in the stretch. McKnight had a three-bagger on the afternoon.
Ontario-bred Inge, a $40K claim last December, is suddenly on the road to the June 30 Queen's Plate.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover heading into Sunday is $6K.
