Mandatory payout on closing day of the Spring Meet for the Pick 6 ($18k carryover) & late Pick 5 (available only to customers of NYRAs account wagering platform - $48,700).
Ten races today. The main track is fast and the turf courses are firm.
Race 6 is an allowance/optional claiming route for NY-breds on turf. Morrison earned a career-best 82 Beyer in his 3yo debut here last Sunday, where he bumped into a very talented Hawkish and settled for a distance second-best. It is a figure that gives him an edge on this field, at least as of now, and he also has speed.
He would be no surprise, but I prefer Way Early to him in this spot. Way Early was a pretty impressive 2yo, winning his career debut with a powerful stretch run from off the pace, and then getting hemmed in along the rail and never getting to use his run, of which he appeared to have plenty, in the stretch of the Awad Stakes.
He has to be ready off the layoff, which is not a given considering George Weaver's numbers in these situations (1 for his last 29 returning from similar layoffs in turf routes).
With the scratch of Phone Funky Monkey, who was a major contender for David Donk, the other horse to consider is Year of the Kitten. He won his career debut over yielding turf at Churchill and is switching from synthetic back to turf after being placed 2nd in Turfway's Rushaway Stakes. He will also be facing NY-breds for the first time, though I can't say I love any of his three races so far.
The colt division of the NY Stallion series goes as race #7 with a field of six (scratch #1 Giant Boo Boo). I went with the two recent debut winners A True Giant and Retonova, with a slight preference to the latter.
Retonova earned an 80 Beyer for his win, which he accomplished from a stalking position, and the form from that debut win is working out pretty well so far.
A True Giant defeated the same rival winning his debut that Retonova had beaten three weeks prior, and did it by a similar margin. He is wheeling back 11 days later for Rudy Rodriguez, who has good numbers with debut winners coming back for their second start, especially in dirt sprints (7 for his last 22, 32%, $3.05 ROI).
The Memories of Silver is Race #8 and it has pulled a field of talented 3yo turf fillies, led by Chad Brown's Significant Form.
She is the horse to beat, but all of Oz Zap, Coffee Crush, and Sweet Sting have the talent to make things difficult for the favorite.
The 9th is another race where Chad has the favorite and horse to beat, but it is not a walkover. Long Haul Bay is a talented horse, and likely better than his competition in this six-furlong sprint for NY-breds, but he is making his first start back from a long layoff, and doing so in a race packed with speed.
In the event that he is not up to his best off the bench, I want to also use Wicked Macho, Summer Bourbon, and a little Sal the Turtle, though he is also making his first start of the year following a long layoff.
The pick six closes out with maidens sprinting on turf. Hangman is an interesting firster for Linda Rice with a big pedigree for turf. Linda's horses tend to need a race, but this horse has landed in the right kind of spot, assuming he has some ability.
Of the experienced runners, I stayed outside with Overnight Success, who is making his second career start after having his debut rained off to the main track, and fellow second-time starter Too Much Data.
