Caledonia Road, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2017, will make her 3-year-old debut Sunday in a second-level allowance race at Belmont Park. The one-mile race is designed to be a prep for Caledonia Road for the Grade 1 Acorn on the June 9 Belmont Stakes card.
Caledonia Road, a daughter of Quality Road, won her maiden at first asking in Saratoga last August before finishing second to Separationofpowers in the Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont last October. In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar, Caledonia Road rolled to a 3 1-4-length victory and was voted the Eclipse Award as the Outstanding 2-year-old filly of the year.
Caledonia Road had a chip removed from an ankle about three weeks after the Breeders’ Cup which delayed her return to the worktab until February. Then she missed some training time due to a virus that kept her off the worktab for several weeks.
“Hopefully, it’s a good a place to get started for the Acorn,” trainer Ralph Nicks said.
Caledonia Road drew post 3 in a five-horse field and will be ridden by Junior Alvarado.
The race will go as the third on the nine race program.
