It'd be a shame if any of the three trainers who have had such an incredible spring meet -- BRAD COX, WESLEY WARD, and CHAD BROWN -- don't wind up in a dead-heat for the leading-trainer title at the 16-day Keeneland spring meet, which ends today with a 10-race card.
Cox (13 for 27) is assured of at least a tie and can win it outright if either of his two in-today starters, TAKE THAT FOR DATA (R7) and TRIPLE DOG DARE (R10), are victorious, regardless of what happens otherwise. Even when coming straight from huge meets at FG and OP, where he exhausted many conditions, Cox, a Kentucky native, enjoyed a meet he'll never forget.
Ward (13 for 40) has no starters remaining, but what he accomplished here will be discussed by knowing horsemen and fans for many years to come. Twelve 4 1/2-furlong races for 2yos were run this meet (there aren't any today), and Ward swept the last 10. Absolutely unreal.
Brown (11 for 21) has two starters going today, MIGHTY SCARLETT (R2) and NEVISIAN SUNSET (R5), and both are morning-line favorites ... so the possibility exists that he could make it a 3-way tie if he wins both while both of the Cox starters get beat later. Regardless, Brown hit pretty much every mark he set for his powerhouse stable at this meet when tying the track record for most stakes wins at a single meet (4), doing so with ANALYZE IT, GOOD MAGIC, RUSHING FALL, and SISTERCHARLIE.
Sensational work, guys, and huge congrats, regardless of what transpires here today.
Among jockeys, FLORENT GEROUX has a big edge toward his first-ever riding title here. Here are the 4 riders with mathematical possibilities to win/tie headed into the finale:
Geroux (18 wins, 8 mounts today)
Jose Ortiz (16 wins, 6 mounts)
Corey Lanerie (14 wins, 6 mounts)
Joel Rosario (14 wins, 5 mounts)
