Blue Grass runner-up Flameaway went a brisk half in 47.86 seconds this morning on Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch's watch in his final Kentucky Derby work, galloping out in 1:02.15. The colt worked outside of allowance/optional winner Ride a Comet (a half brother to last year's Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit), who is pointing to the Grade 2 American Turf on the Derby undercard.
Trainer Mark Casse said he was glad he had his rider wearing a radio for the work, as the energetic Flameaway was on his way to doing much more than the trainer had planned.
"He was gonna go really fast," Casse said. "We slowed him up - we started slowing him up about the three-sixteenths pole because I think he was gonna go in 46 and change. I've never seen him breeze like this. He just seems to be getting better and better."
