Toinette ($12.80) over a bad start and rallied down the center of the Churchill Downs turf course under Flavien Prat to nail a game Rushing Fall by a neck in the Grade 3, $200,000 Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs.
It was Rushing Fall’s first career defeat after winning her first four starts including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last November.
Toinette, a daughter of Scat Daddy trained by Neil Drysdale, won her third consecutive race _ all on turf _ after losing her debut on dirt last November at Del Mar.
Rushing Fall, the even-money favorite under Javier Castellano broke from the outside post in the 10-horse field, but was a bit too keen early and found herself dueling on the lead with Figarella’s Queen through a quarter in 24.40 seconds and a half-mile in 48.21 seconds.
Rushing Fall moved toward the lead entering the far turn, but was soon confronted by Daddy Is a Legend under Irad Ortiz Jr.
Those two duked it out from the top of the lane into deep stretch when Rushing Fall was getting the better of Daddy Is a Legend.
But Toinette, who got pinched back at the start, came with a flying finish to get the victory, rallying from ninth in the 10-horse field to get the job done.
“We’ve just seen she has pretty good turn of foot,” Drysdale said. “I don’t think missing the break helped things.”
Toinette covered the 1 1-16 miles in 1:41.70.
The order of finish was 7-11-6-1.
