LOUISVILLE, Ky. – AMERICAN GAL got a perfect trip from her outside box before going on to a dominating triumph in the 32nd running of the Grade 1, $300,000 Humana Distaff, the first stakes on the blockbuster Kentucky Derby card Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz for trainer Simon Callaghan, American Gal returned $7.80 as second choice in a field of seven fillies and mares after finishing seven furlongs in 1:22.33 over a muddy, sealed track. The winner is a 4-year-old Concorde Point filly bred in Kentucky by her owner, Kaleem Shah.
IVY BELL was second, about three lengths behind the winner while well clear of third-finisher LEWIS BAY. FINLEY'SLUCKYCHARM, the early pace-setter and lukewarm 5-2 favorite, faded to fourth.
The $2 exacta (8-3) paid $40.40, the $1 trifecta (8-3-5) returned $63.30, and the $1 superfecta (8-3-5-1) was worth $102.80.
Byron King will have the full Humana Distaff recap up before long on www.drf.com.
