In a result somewhat befitting of the weather conditions, Funny Duck pulled off a 39-1 upset in Saturday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Pat Day Mile at sloppy Churchill Downs.
Funny Duck, who had won just once from six career starts _ that on turf _ sat an inside trip under Brian Hernandez, right New York Central.
New York Central, a 31-1 shot under Ricardo Santana, took over from the pace-setting Lombo at the five-sixteenths pole while Funny Duck followed New York Central along the rail.
Funny Duck tipped to the outside at the three-sixteenths pole, ran by New York Central at the eighth pole and drew off to win.
New York Central, a 31-1 shot finished second while Givemeaminit rallied along the rail to finish third while Sporting Chance finished fourth.
Funny Duck, a son of Distorted Humor owned by Brad Kelley’s Calumet Farm and trained by Rusty Arnold, covered the mile in 1:37.16 in the slop and paid $81.40 to win.
The 4-3 exacta returned $1,753 for $2 while the $0.50 trifecta paid $8,569 and the $1 superfecta returned $74,919.
This was the second year that Calumet and Arnold won the Pat Day Mile. They captured last year’s running with Wild Shot ($19.40).
