Jockey Mike Smith won Sunday's eighth race at Santa Anita on 4-5 Achira, but only after the 4-year-old filly survived a lengthy inquiry regarding her running path in the stretch.
Achira led throughout an allowance race with a $40,000 claiming options, holding an advantage of more than a length on the backstretch. In the final furlong, Achira drifted sharply to the outside, forcing runner-up Helen Hillary off her running lane.
In a majority decision, the stewards ruled that Helen Hillary was not cost a better placing. Achira finished a half-length in front of Helen Hillary. A majority decision indicates that the final vote was 2-1.
Smith, who won Saturday's Kentucky Derby on the unbeaten Justify, is scheduled to meet with stewards Grant Baker, Scott Chaney, and Kim Sawyer on Thursday to discuss his ride on Achira.
Smith had two mounts on Sunday. He finished fifth in the Grade 3 Adoration Stakes aboard Vale Dori, in her first start of 2018.
