Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness second choice Good Magic simply jogged a mile Friday morning over Pimlico’s extremely sloppy main track.
Trainer Chad Brown elected to change plans after his assistant trainer Jose Hernandez and exercise rider Walter Malasquez expressed dissatisfaction with the surface after training two other horses over it earlier in the morning.
”They just felt the track today was in worse shape than any of the three days he galloped,” Brown said. “I don’t want to take a chance on this horse getting injured galloping on (that) track when he doesn’t even need to gallop.”
Good Magic showed his high energy level when he nearly reared as he came off the track to go back to the barn.
”His energy level is really, really good right now,” Brown said. “I’m really, really pleased with him.”
Good Magic was the first Preakness horse on the grounds, arriving Monday morning. He galloped three days over a wet track, one which he is likely to get in Saturday’s Preakness.
“I do like the fact the horse was able to gallop here three days over a track he is likely to see Saturday,” Brown said. “Whether it helps or not it makes me feel good that he’s got his footing over the track when it’s wet. I don’t see how that can hurt us, maybe it’ll help us.”
