Vertical Oak replicated her performance in last year’s Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes here by scoring about a two-length victory in Friday’s $100,000 Skipat Stakes at sloppy Pimlico.
Vertical Oak, under Ricardo Santana Jr., dueled outside of Ms Locust Point _ who was favored by $357 over Vertical Oak _ through a quarter in 23.03 seconds and a half-mile in 46.31.
Vertical Oak began to edge away late and won by about two, while Startwithsilver rallied along the rail by to get second by about a half-length over Ms Locust Point. Toby Girl and Luckyallmylife completed the order of finish in the scratch reduced field of five.
The win was sixth from 15 starts for Vertical Oak, a 4-year-old daughter of Giant Oak owned by Kirk and Judy Robison and trained by Steve Asmussen.
Among Vertical Oak’s previous wins was a 3 3-4-length score in last year’s Grade 3 Miss Preakness also run on Black-Eyed Susan day at Pimlico.
Vertical Oak covered six furlongs in 1:10.35 and returned $4.60 to win.
