SWITZERLAND gave the trainer-jockey team of Steve Asmussen and Ricardo Santana Jr. their third stakes victory Saturday on the Preakness undercard at Pimlico when drawing off with authority in the 32nd running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Maryland Sprint.
After putting away Red Dragon Tattoo in the turn, Switzerland turned back favored LONG HAUL BAY in the upper stretch en route to a 3 1/2-length score. Long Haul Bay was second, with LEWISFIELD third and IRISH COLONEL fourth in a field of nine older horses.
Switzerland, owned by the Woodford Racing LLC of Bill Farish and partners, returned $7.80 as second choice after finishing six furlongs in 1:09.43 over a sloppy track.
Asmussen and Santana teamed earlier on the card to win the James W. Murphy with Tap Daddy and the Chick Lang with Mitole.
The $2 exacta (5-9) paid $22.40, the $1 trifecta (5-9-4) returned $31.50, and the 10-cent superfecta (5-9-4-6) was worth $22.03.
David Grening will have the full Maryland Sprint recap up before long on www.drf.com.
