Abel Tasman, last year's champion 3-year-old filly, will make her second start of the year in the Grade 1, $750,000 Ogden Phipps for older females at Belmont Park on June 9, her trainer, Bob Baffert, said.
Abel Tasman was a disappointing fourth in the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs earlier this month in her first start of the year, but she returned to Santa Anita after that and worked five furlongs in a sharp 59.40 seconds on Monday, the best time of 44 at the distance.
“She worked great,” Baffert said. “She needed that last race.”
Baffert also said that the popular veteran Hoppertunity would return to the scene of one of his biggest career victories, as he is scheduled to run in the Grade 2, $400,000 Brooklyn Stakes for older horses at Belmont Park, also on June 9.
Hoppertunity won the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in the fall of 2016, one of eight victories in a 31-race career that has gleaned more than $4.4 million in earnings for the 7-year-old horse.
