Gronkowski, a multiple winner on synthetic surfaces in Europe, had his first local workout on dirt Saturday morning, going a half-mile in 48.07 seconds on DRF Clocker Mike Welsch's watch with the graded stakes winner Engage. Gronkowski is a possible starter in the Belmont Stakes while Engage is being pointed to the Grade 2 Woody Stephens.
The work was done over the Belmont main track following the mid-morning renovation break.
With jockey Jose Ortiz up, Gronkowski worked on the inside of Engage and though he started slighly ahead of Engage the pair were on equal terms most of the way, getting their final quarter in 23.62 seconds. Gronkowski galloped out very well, going five furlongs in 1:00.20 and six furlongs in just under 1:14.
Will update later with comments from trainer Chad Brown on drf.com.
