Accelerate won his second Grade 1 at 1 1-4 miles this year in Saturday's $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. Accelerate won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Accelerate ($5.80) was timed in 2:01.38. Espinoza had Accelerate in third for much of the race, stalking pacesetter Dr. Dorr through fractions of 23.28 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.40 for a half-mile.
City of Light, the 6-5 favorite, took the lead from Dr. Dorr entering the stretch, but was quickly challenged by Accelerate who pulled clear to win by 4 1-2 lengths over Dr. Dorr, who closed well in the final furlong to pass City of Light. Dr. Dorr finished 1 1-4 lengths in front of City of Light, who was followed by Pavel, Prince of Arabia and Full of Luck.
Accelerate races for Pete and Kosta Hronis and trainer John Sadler. A 5-year-old horse by Lookin at Lucky, Accelerate has won 7 of 19 starts and earned $1,712,480. He finished second to City of Light in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in Arkansas on April 14.
