The unheralded Sophie P. pulled off a 14-1 upset in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, nosing out Madam Dancealot with Madame Stripes right there too in a thrilling three-horse battle to the wire.

Sophie P. ($30) tracked pacesetter Madame Stripes into the lane and wore her down in the shadow of the wire, but had to withstand a belated rail bid from Madame Dancealot in the 1 1/8-mile grass race for older females.

Kent Desormeaux rode Sophie P. for trainer Jim Cassidy.

Sophie P. was making her second start in this country after a non-descript campaign in her native Great Britain, where she won four times in 19 starts and earned about $76,000. She was sixth of nine in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine at Santa Anita on April 7 in her only previous start this year and in this country.

Hawksmoor, the favorite, stumbled badly leaving the gate and wound up well back early, taking her out of her preferred stalking style. She got closer heading to the far turn but understandly emptied out in the final furlong.

Sophie P. completed 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in 1:48.53.
