Santa Anita Friday preview

Main-track favorites have won at a 44-percent clip this meet; grass favorites 32 percent. With that in mind, preview of Friday at Santa Anita …

Race 1 – Graycaster (6) is a short price in this claiming sprint for 3yos. Class drop, return to dirt, fastest in the field, and outside post. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is 6-for-12 with SA dirt-sprint favorites since Dec. 26. Expect that Graycaster will win, and get claimed.

Race 2 – La La Land (3) is a legit favorite in this N1X turf mile for 3yos based on his runner-up stakes finish, but he is not a slam dunk. Pepe Tono (6), whose company lines include Justify, is first-time turf and first-time Flavien Prat. Progeny of Bodemeister have won just 9 percent first-time turf, but this colt’s off-the-pace style might be more conducive to grass than dirt. He is 5-1, and a must-use.

Race 3 – Touching Rainbows (6) should win this N3X sprint, and wheel back June 23 for the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes. The recent N2X comeback win by Touching Rainbows was super; he worked well since then under Prat. Trainer Phil D’Amato has another good sprinter on his hands, seeking his fourth straight.

Race 5 – The Tulip (8) is the program favorite in this N2X turf route, but the betting favorite is more likely to be Vasilika (6), who won four of her last five and is another “live” mount for leading rider Prat.

Race 6 – Aunt Lubie (3) did not have any speed in her debut. “She does now,” trainer Richard Mandella said this week. The second-start maiden probably wants two turns, but Mandella ran her in this seven-furlong sprint due to concern a two-turn race next week would not fill. Prat again.

Race 7 – Peter Miller starts the two favorites in this $20k claiming sprint. They are front-runners Palace Paynter (7) and Uno Trouble Maker (2). However, come-from-behind dropper Twisted Rosie (9) gets a beneficial pace scenario and is reunited with Kent Desormeaux. At 4-1, she is among the more appealing gambles on the card.

Race 8 – Medaglia Gold (8) can upset this N1X turf mile for 3yo fillies if she rations her speed. She is 6-1, and that is gambling number.

First post Friday is 12:30.
