Free Drop Billy breezed Sunday morning at Churchill Downs in preparation for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, working five furlongs in 59 1/5 seconds over a fast track.
He was one of a handful of horses being pointed toward the Belmont that took to the track Sunday at Churchill, though the others were out for routine gallops. Among those was Triple Crown hopeful Justify, who was his usual sharp self.
Justify is scheduled to have his final work before the Belmont on Monday before he ships to New York on Wednesday.
Free Drop Billy looms a longshot in the Belmont after having gone winless in five starts since winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in October, most recently finishing 16th in the Kentucky Derby.
Also working Sunday at Churchill was Kentucky Oaks winner Monomoy Girl, who sped a half mile in 47 1/5 seconds in company. She goes next in the Grade 1 Acorn on the Belmont undercard.
