New Money Honey, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2016 and the Belmont Oaks last year as a 3-year-old, successfully returned to racing Thursday by winning the eighth race at Belmont Park.
Favored at 1-9 odds against a short allowance field largely filled with third-level fillies and mares, New Honey Honey had to work hard to prevail. Perched in third during the early part of the race, she was asked to pick up her pace at the top of the stretch when Special Event surged to a clear lead, but ultimately wore her down under right-handed pressure from regular jockey Javier Castellano. She won by a long neck, completing 1 1/16 miles on a good turf course in 1:41.22.
