2yo Lexitonian debut winner for Calumet, Pletcher, Velazquez

The Calumet Farm homebred Lexitonian (that's right, no 'g') started his career with a victory in the sixth race, a 2-year-old maiden-special-weight, Wednesday at Belmont. Under John Velazquez, Lexitonian, off splits of 22.42 and 45.53, ran five furlongs on a fast track in 57.93 beating 9/5 favorite Bankit by about one length.

It wasn't a brilliant performance, but Lexitonian performed well above par in the professionalism department. He broke from the rail as Bankit from post 2 was sent to the front, and Lexitonian stayed glued to the fence the entire trip, rating kindly and eating dirt like a horse typically well schooled in the morning by trainer Todd Pletcher. With Bankit far enough off the rail at the top of the stretch, Velazquez asked Lexitonian for run and the colt went through the hole willingingly, drawing away late and throwing his ears up at the finish after Velazquez relaxed his pressure.

Lexitonian might carry his head a touch high and he doesn't look especially physically advanced. The colt is by Speightstown and while his dam, Riviera Romper, is by Tapit, there's not a ton of proven quality on the track emanating from the female side of his pedigree. But he is a winner on a major circuit, and that's not going away.
