Athena, who finished third in the Grade 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland on Sunday, wheeled back on just six days rest with the race of her life, rallying to a convincing 2 1/2 length victory over Thewayiam in the $1 million Belmont Oaks. Chipolata, like the winner making her U.S. debut on Saturday, finished a neck further back in third.
Athena, an Irish bred daughter of Camelot, raced on Lasix for the first in the Grade 1 Oaks. Trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden to victory by Ryan Moore, Athena returned $22.80 after negotiating a mile and one quarter over a firm course in 1:58.71.
