Owning, a Flashback colt purchased for $260,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale of 2-year-olds in-training in April, won his debut in Sunday's second race at 5 1-2 furlongs.

Ridden by Mario Gutierrez for Paul and Zillah Reddam, Owning ($8.60) stalked pacesetter Hartel to early stretch before drawing off to win by 2 1-2 lengths over Tariq in 1:04.20.

Owning is trained by Simon Callaghan, who said the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at 6 1-2 furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 11 is a goal.
