Carol Cedeno set a record for wins in a day by a rider at Delaware Park on Wednesday, scoring with seven of her nine mounts on the 10-race card
The former record was six victories, which had been accomplished seven times. Michael McCarthy rode six winners twice, once in 1997 and again in 1998. The other riders are Joe Rocco Jr. (2011), Jimmy Edwards (1984), Greg McCarron (1974), George Cusimano (1968), and Eldon Nelson (1958).
Cedeno rode six Thoroughbred winners and one Arabian. The other riders won solely Thoroughbred races.
She won the first four races on the card with Warrior Lake ($4.80) for Scott Lake, Golden Ray ($2.80) for Jorge Navarro, Posterity ($3.80) for Wayne Potts, and Make My Saturday ($13.60) for Lake.
She finished sixth in race 5, then came back to win the sixth on Here's to Mike ($4.20) for Navarro and the seventh on Southern Christmas ($6), her third win of the day for Lake, who has retaken the lead in the trainer standings from Jamie Ness. Cedeno finished fifth in race 8 and then came back to win the nightcap on Tiffanys Dream ($2.60), an Arabian, who is trained by Jerenesto Torrez.
Cedeno was the leading rider at Delaware in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and finished a close second last year to Scott Spieth. Cedeno is the leading overall rider at the current meet with 32 wins, 14 more than Angel Suarez, who is in second place.
She is represented by agent Mark Mace.
Cedeno is the second rider to have a huge day in the region in the last four days. Jose Ferrer won six races at Monmouth Park on Sunday. The record for wins on a card at Monmouth is seven.
