It’s a perfect storm at Delaware Park today as the overall card is good, there aren’t too many scratches, and the weather is summer nice. Oh, and the $750,000 Delaware Handicap offers an intriguing matchup between the Grade 1 winners Elate and Unbridled Mo.
Farrell has officially been scratched from the Grade 2, 1 1/4-mile Del Cap, leaving a field of eight.
The race includes Grade 2 winner Mopotism, Grade 3 winner Teresa Z, and a trio for owner Ron Paolucci, which includes Nikki My Darling and Proper Discretion, who have speed, and the deep closer Fuhriously Kissed, who adds blinkers.
Of that group, Teresa Z may prove the most dangerous. She looked sharp winning the Obeah Stakes for trainer Anthony Margotta Jr. The distance should be within his range and it never hurts to have a race over the track.
Elate will be making her first start since she finished fourth against older runners in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar. It should be noted her trainer, Hall of Famer Bill Mott, is adept in bringing horses back off long layoffs.
He sent Yoshida out to win the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs in May off a 210-day layoff. Over the last five years, Mott is 18 for 87 (21 percent) and has a positive ROI bringing horses back from layoffs of between 200 and 300 days at a mile or more.
Unbridled Mo stretches out in distance off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps, a one-turn, 1 1/16-mile race. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Unbridled Mo is seven for eight in two-turn races like the Del Cap and zero for three in one-turn starts. Two starts back, she upset the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park around two turns.
** Untamed Domain will be favored in the Grade 3 $200,000 Kent, a 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds. He will need a best effort to break a five-race losing streak. Hot Springs and Way Early look to be his chief rivals.
** The $75,000 Hockessin has scratched down from 11 entrants to eight but is not an easy race. Late-running Stallwalkin’ Dude, who is trained by David Jacobson, is the horse to beat but must not drop too far back. Chublicious, The Man, and Always Sunshine look to be the main threats.
The Hockessin is part of the MATCH Series.
** Hoffenheim, also trained by Jacobson, has good speed and is clearly the horse to beat in the Carl Hanford, a 1 1/6-mile race. Hoffenheim shipped to Delaware to win his most recent start.
Name Changer is in sharp form for trainer Alan Goldberg. He is two for two since returning from an 11-month layoff.
** Temperatures in Stanton, Del., today should top out in the high 80’s. The humidity is on the low side.
