An overflow field for the featured Oceanside Stakes, plus races for maiden 2-year-old fillies featuring some well-regarded newcomers, highlight the opening-day card at Del Mar on Wednesday, for which entries were taken and posts drawn on Saturday.
The Oceanside, at one mile on turf for 3-year-olds, includes Faversham, the full brother to California Chrome who won a maiden race last time out, as well as Desert Stone and Move Over. It goes as race 8 on the 10-race card.
Also of interest are a pair of maiden races for 2-year-old fillies -- one an open race, the other restricted to California-breds -- and there are some fast-working first-time starters in the open race, most notably Angel Alessandra (Ghostzapper) for Peter Miller and Brill (Medaglia d'Oro) for Jerry Hollendorfer. That five-furlong race goes as race 7.
Speaking of 2-year-olds, my annual story on 2-year-olds to follow this meet will be on-line on Monday and in the Wednesday print edition. There are a number of youngsters with major potential set to go this season.
