Del Mar Saturday: early trends, preview

Saturday at Del Mar …

Race 1 – Chasin Lucas (7) benefits from an early-meet profile that seems to favor the outside in main-track sprints. Based on her runner-up debut, she will be tough in this Calbred MSW, though Queen Shelly Ann (5) is better than her “off-slow” debut.

Race 3 – Only one of the 11 dirt sprints opening week was won by the pacesetter. Not saying there is a bias, not saying closers are automatic. But if you like a rally-wide closer, the racing surface is is not a hindrance. Horse Greedy (6), a rally-wide closer dropping from a G3 third, is favored. Top choice Allaboutaction (3) is the likely pacesetter.

Race 4 – Vasilika (6) seeks her fifth straight in this N3X filly-mare turf mile. Tactical speed was effective opening week on turf. Vasilika can press or rally. Algorhythmic (7) stretches out as a theft candidate. Two of the eight turf routes opening week were won by the pacesetter, two others by a horse sitting second. Yes, tactical speed is good on turf.

Race 6 – Libby’s Tail (4) at 7-2? Fair enough. Runner-up last out in a similar N1X turf mile, she should get a great trip positioned second or third behind the speed.

Race 7 – All four dirt routes opening week were won by the favorite. Accelerate (7) will try to extend the streak in the G2 San Diego Handicap. He carries top weight of 125 pounds; perhaps he does not “have to” win. Two Thirty Five (4) won a fast N2X route last out; lightly raced Catalina Cruiser (1) won a fast N1X sprint last out. He is a future star and a “must use” if he runs.

Race 8 – In a wide-open edition of the G2 San Clemente, Rockin Ready (1) offers value at 8-1. Her best race was a maiden win at a mile on turf two back; she has tactical speed and she can finish. But a case can be made for many in this evenly matched field.

Race 9 – The 2yo first-time starter Rowayton (10) is training like a beast. He will be tough to beat for Jerry Hollendorfer-Larry Best-Drayden Van Dyke combo. They already unveiled two potential 2yo stars this summer (Instagrand, Brill). Another forthcoming?

Race 10 – Stuck? No worries. The 8-1 longshot Ten Count Out (4) might save the day in this MSW turf route. First time long, potentially loose on the lead. Come catch her over an unbiased turf course that produced a gate-to-wire winner each of the past two days.
