More rain for the Thursday card. We are sloppy and off the turf with the Grade 1 A. P. Smithwick over jumps postponed until Monday.
Scratches and changes are here.
The feature is an excellent running of the $100k John Morrissey for NY-bred sprinters and it remains intact with a field of nine.
With most of the main contenders already proven to be at least capable over a wet track, we won't worry too much about the conditions.
Eye Luv Lulu is the horse to beat exiting a bang-up race in the Grade 2 Belmont Sprint Championship off a short layoff on July 7th. He was bet hard for a red-hot trainer one start prior to that against state-breds and prevailed with a 98 Beyer. He is also 7 for 16 lifetime over wet tracks. One thing to note about that wet track record: he was an excellent horse off an off track early in his career but seems not to relish those conditions so much as an older horse. He has lost six in a row when the track is something other than 'fast', including a drubbing in this race last year vs. a weaker field than this one.
Both Gold for the King and Runaway Lute are contenders at better prices.
Gold for the King took no prisoners on the front-end and posted a facile win with a new top figure in his second start back from a layoff. He has always been a good horse while coming up with issues along the way, and he was compromised by dynamics in his first start back. Whether he can back up that big win against tougher and over a wet track remains to be seen, but he fits with these horses and doesn't need the lead to be effective.
Runaway Lute is stepping up at the right time following a pair of career-best performances since returning as a 4yo. This is going to be much tougher for him, but he has been legitimately good in his first two starts of the year and is a threat to pull off an upset.
I'm siding with Long Haul Bay, who has raced sparingly so far but has yet to fail to show up when entered. He is a horse who fits well in open stakes company and he ran a nice race for 2nd last time behind the in-form Switzerland at Pimlico. I would prefer him over a fast track, but he handled the slop in that last one.
Updates picks for the races moved off the turf:
Race 3: 3-1-5-2
Race 4: 10-6-7-4
Race 10: 13-1-10-4
Reminder that with the Smithwick postponed the card will begin with Race 2 at approximately 1:33 ET.
