McKinzie, rated as a Triple Crown hopeful until being sidelined by injury in late March, worked three furlongs in 37.60 seconds on Wednesday, the first workout of an expected comeback.
McKinzie, who won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity last December for trainer Bob Baffert, was taken out of training with a hock injury.
There were 121 recorded works on Wednesday. Battle of Midway, the winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last November, worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds, the fastest of 52 works at the distance. Battle of Midway was sent to stud last winter but found to be subfertile and was put back in training a few months ago with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
There is a possibility Battle of Midway could have his comeback in the $75,000 Harry Brubaker Stakes at a mile on Aug. 22. Third in the 2017 Kentucky Derby, Battle of Midway has won 5 of 10 starts and earned more than $1.2 million.
