Late post Friday at Del Mar, 4 p.m. Preview of the eight-race card …
Race 1 – Lucky Staxx (2) tries to become just the second horse this meet to wire the field at six and a half furlongs (this is the tenth race at the distance). He might prefer shorter. Program favorite R Cha Cha (3) and dropper Will Tell (5) will be breathing down the leader's neck.
Race 2 – Powder (9) won at Del Mar last summer, worked well here last week and drops from N1X to Cal-bred allowance/optional claiming. Powder and Discatsonthesquare (6) are the only runners entered for the optional claim tag; both received positive comments from workout analyst Toby Turrell in the Daily Racing Form Del Mar Clocker Report.
Race 3 – The pick six starts with a turf route and a traditional carryover of $76,769. Turf-route favorites are just 4 of 31 this summer. Sunday Prophet (6), third last out vs. similar, is favored in this $62.5k maiden-claiming mile for fillies and mares. Blinkers off is a benefit, trainer Richard Baltas has come to life winning four of his last 13; Baltas also starts Into Glamour (10). For a potential upset, Conformation (5) last out “covered more ground than Lewis and Clark” according to Santa Anita announcer Michael Wrona. He is right. It was a very wide trip. And this race is wide open.
Race 4 – Captivate (8) will be tough to beat in this starter allowance sprint, based on his highly rated maiden-50 win last out. Sharp work over the track according to Turrell, who noted that Lucky Romano (1) worked “big” from the gate on July 26 with Rafael Bejarano aboard.
Race 5 – Wide open starter allowance turf mile; Tell Me More (3) and Foxtail (4) among the leading contenders. Foxtail worked in company July 27 with Sig Alert, a promising 2-year-old that makes his career debut Saturday in race 7.
Race 6 – Leadville (6), runner-up in a juvenile stakes last out at Pleasanton, drops to Calbred maiden and worked well over the Del Mar track July 27 with new rider Joe Talamo. Top choice Mobou (8) had an eventful third-place debut, and trained okay since.
Race 7 – Okinawa (6) is rock solid in the $75k Daisycutter Handicap for filly-mare turf sprinters. Big numbers in New York, two super works over the Del Mar turf course. Okinawa, trained by Baltas, is 2-1 and the most probable winner on the card.
Race 8 – Maiden-20 sprint, droppers Gia Lula (7) and Majestic Authority (6) top contenders.
