Jockey John Velazquez is off his mounts today due to swelling in an ankle, his agent, Angel Cordero Jr. said.
Velazquez was scheduled to ride five mounts at Saratoga on Wednesday.
According to Cordero, Velazquez banged his ankle in the gate a few days ago and on Wednesday there was swelling. Velazquez visited a doctor and X-rays were clean, Cordero said.
“The doctor said the best thing was to give it a rest for a day or two,” said Cordero, who added that Velazquez’s status for Thursday would be assessed that day. “If the ankle is okay tomorrow, I’ll let him ride, if not I’ll take him off.”
Velazquez is 12 for 81 at the meet.
Velazquez is named on four horses at Saratoga on Thursday.
Cordero said his major focus this week for Velazquez is Saturday’s Arlington card where Velazquez rides Money Multiplier in the Million, Sistercharlie in the Beverly D and Carrick in the Grade 1 Secretariat.
