A 3-year-old named Duchossois won his career debut in the third race on Arlington Million Day. The colt by Animal Kingdom is owned by one of the most prominent operations in Illinois, Rich and Karen Papiese's Midwest Thoroughbredsm, and is named for an iconic figure in Chicago racing, Arlington chairman Richard Duchossois.
Papiese said he reached out to the 97-year-old Duchossois about using his name for a horse and despite Duchossois's desire to keep himself out of the spotlight was given the go-ahead.
Duchossois (the horse) was training in New York last year when he bucked shins and had to be taken out of training. Stabled here at Arlington with longtime Midwest trainer Roger Brueggeman, Duchossois has been working steadily since May. Papiese this spring hoped to have him ready for the Secretariat Stakes today but had to settle for a debut score instead.
Duchossois rallied from the back a soft-seeming maiden field to win a turf mile going away at odds of 2/1. Brueggeman said he planned to run Duchossois (the horse) back in an allowance race here.
