Last fall, trainer Chad Brown made his first foray into the European yearling market purchasing a dozen yearlings at the Tattersalls sales.
The first of those purchases to run was Newspaperofrecord, who galloped to a visually impressive 6 3-4-length debut win Sunday. Newspaperofrecord, a daughter of Lope de Vega, is owned by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables, which won its meet-leading 14th race of the summer here.
Brown purchased six yearlings for Klarman and six for Peter Brant.
“Seth’s always been an open-minded forward thinker,” Brown said. “If there are opportunities where we can improve the stable, he’s always receptive in listening to them. So far, the experiment’s worked.”
Brown said he liked Newspaperofrecord because he’s a fan of the stallion Lope de Vega and “she was really attractive looking, looked like she’d get two turns over here, looked like she’d do in America.”
Brown said Newspaperofrecord “identified herself as potentially being special about a month ago when we let her stretch her legs out on the turf and see what she had. It became apparent we were having trouble to find partners for her to work with.”
Newspaperofrecord, who was ridden Sunday by Irad Ortiz Jr., covered 1 1-16-miles in 1:46.96 over yielding turf.
It was Brown’s sixth win with a 2-year-old first-time starter at the meet.
Brown said he would look to run Newspaperofrecord in the Grade 2, $200,000 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont on Sept. 30 as, hopefully, a steppingstone to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 2.
Brown also ran second in the race with Sister Kitten, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Kitten’s Joy owned and bred by Ken and Sarah Ramsey.
