Del Mar Sunday preview

Handicapping considerations, Sunday at Del Mar …

Race 1 – Carville (3) was compromised by the “race shape” both recent; the front-runner finished off the board while late-runners dominated. If his new rider can ration his speed, Carville might upset Popular Kid (6). Limited wagering value in a six-horse field.

Race 2 – Bonsail Treasure (2) is trained by Lloyd Wicker, who is 0-for-13 with first-time starters. But the Formulator sample goes back only five years. Wicker won in 2010 with firster Cashmere Mist ($20.20), 2006 with firsters Bella Dancer ($48.60) and Mountain Warrior ($15.40), and 2004 with firster Lunar Dreams ($22.40). Wicker-trained Bonsail Treasure, listed at 8-1, merits consideration in a weak Cal-bred maiden-50.

Race 3 – Powder (4) and Chasin Lucas (7) are logical in this sprint. But up-in-class stablemates Princess Kendra (5) and Princess Dorian (6) are fast enough on figures.

Race 4 – Bob Baffert is 7-for-7 this meet with 2yo first-time starters. If Tale of the Union (2) runs like he trains, make it eight. Baffert also entered firster Mucho Gusto (3). According to Daily Racing Form workout analyst Toby Turrell, Mucho Gusto worked in company with a talented unraced colt named Admiral Brown. He is a sibling to Firing Line. Might want to remember the name: Admiral Brown.

Race 5 – Sea Sensation (2), wide-trip fifth last out, might be okay at low odds in this turf route. However, Kent Desormeaux’s mounts this summer continue to be undervalued. They produced a 78-cent return for each $2 wagered to win.

Race 7 – Peter Miller has won eight of the 10 turf sprints this summer in which he had a starter. So, do you want to bet against Miller-trained Surrender Now (8)? She popped at $49 her first start over the course. This handicapper prefers Go On Mary (6) and Rubilinda (2), but Surrender Now will be included in any multi-race wager.

Race 8 – Distinctive B (9) is a proper favorite in this N1X sprint, but this race might be more open than perceived initially. Very Very Stella (2), Make It a Triple (3) and Street Vison (5) all have an attribute that the comeback favorite lacks. That is, recent form.

Race 9 – Just Grazed Me (9) won both her starts and continues to train super. But the G3 Torrey Pines for 3yo fillies at one mile is her first around two turns, while Lemoona (4) and Thirteen Squared (2) are proven at a route. What’s the big deal about an age-restricted G3 in late summer? Past winners of the Torrey Pines include Stellar Wind, Beholder, Switch and Pussycat Doll.

Race 10 – Flynn (6) is ready to roll, first start back, returning at rock bottom maiden-20.

Key plays: Bonsail Treasure at 8-1 in race 2, Flynn at 5-1 (likely bet down) in race 10.
