Apprentice rider Antonio Quiles was taken to Howard County hospital complaining of shoulder pain after his mount Rubys Fire collapsed in the sixth race at Laurel Park on Friday.
Rubys Fire, a 3-year-old filly, set the early pace in the conditioned $5,000 claiming sprint but had dropped back in the pack before she fell. Quiles was thrown forward into the ground.
Giolilmiss, who was trailing jumped over the fallen Rubys Fire but did not appear to hit Quiles.
Rubys Fire died in the accident. It was not clear whether she died before falling or during the accident.
Quiles, a seven-pound apprentice, is a native of Puerto Rico. He has been riding in the United States since February and has 29 Thoroughbred wins from 229 mounts. He is represented by agent Tom Stift.
