Sal Sinatra, president of the Maryland Jockey Club, said the far turn of the Laurel Park turf course is still too soft, after races 2, 4, and 8 were switched to the main track following race 1, a mile grass race that was timed in 1:44.93.
Sinatra said, the jockeys were unhappy with the footing on the turf following race 1 and that management agreed.
Earlier Sunday morning, races, 5, 7, and 10 were moved to the dirt, although track management had hoped to keep races 1, 2, 4, and 8 on grass.
Laurel Park is situated on low-lying land, and while the turf course drainage tubes continue to empty into the infield lake, Sinatra said, "There just isn’t anywhere for the water to go."
At one point, it had rained at Laurel in 28 of 31 days, according to Sinatra. With the temperatures remaining cool and humid, in addition to heavy dew at night, the course has been very slow to dry.
The pick three and pick five, which began on race 1 will be "all wins" legs in races 2 and 4.
