Lone Sailor, who in his last start won the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby, is scheduled to be cross-entered in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, trainer Tom Amoss said Monday. The races will be run at the horse's base of Churchill Downs.
Last year, Battle of Midway parlayed a runner-up finish in the Oklahoma Derby into a win in the BC Dirt Mile.
Lone Sailor closed with authority to win the Oklahoma Derby in a three-way photo. He has emerged from the mile and an eighth race in excellent condition, said Amoss.
"We'll probably roll the dice, try one of the Breeders' Cup races," Amoss said Monday. "We're looking at the Classic, as well as the Dirt Mile. There's still a lot of moving parts as far as where we end up. I realize we're taking a major step forward here. I can't emphasize enough what having a killer instinct - as he had in his race in Oklahoma as opposed to his other races leading up to it - has meant to us moving forward. This is what we were waiting for. It was a breakthrough in his undertanding of racing, not just for this race, but for the future. It's exciting."
Lone Sailor, who earlier this year was third to champion Good Magic in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, races for G M B Racing.
