Dream Tree came out of her work this morning at Santa Anita with an entrapped epiglottis that will need surgery and thus is out of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs, trainer Bob Baffert reported at his Santa Anita barn at 10 am.
Dream Tree worked in company just after 9 am and worked fast, in 46.80 seconds for a half-mile, but had to be shoved along late to best her company. She was "making noise" after the work, Baffert said, and an endoscopic examination minutes later at the barn revealed the isssue.
Dream Tree, 3, is unbeaten in five starts. She was also scheduled to be sold at auction following the Breeders' Cup, but Baffert said she will be withdrawn. She will remain in training next year, he said.
Also related to this development is that Mike Smith will now get on Marley's Freedom for the Filly and Mare Sprint, Baffert said. Smith was to ride Dream Tree, and Drayden Van Dyke Marley's Freedom, but Smith will move to Marley's Freedom, and Van Dyke will be the odd man out.
