Pavel, in his final work for the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs, worked seven furlongs in 1:26.45 on Friday at Santa Anita at about 12:30, a half-hour before the day's first race.
Pavel's splits were 24.87 seconds for the quarter, 49.87 seconds for a half, and 1:14.37 for six furlongs. He finished his final furlong in 12.08 seconds and was shoved along a bit late by jockey Mario Gutierrez.
It is a very warm day here, with temperatures about 90 degrees, and Pavel was quite washy. He likely will enjoy the cooler climes of Kentucky next week, not to mention returning to Churchill Downs, where he won the Stephen Foster in June.
