Wesley Ward, who is known for training precocious, globe-trotting juveniles, will have four runners - or, a third of the field - for the inaugural running of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Friday at Churchill Downs.
As expected, a full starting gate of 12, plus the maximum four also-eligibles, showed up when final entries were taken and the field was drawn on Monday. Late-running Strike Silver, winner of the Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland, drew the rail and was installed as the 4-1 morning line favorite.
Ward's quartet includes Shang Shang Shang, winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes in June at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting in her most recent start. The trainer will also saddle Chelsea Cloisters, Moonlight Romance, and Stillwater Cove.
