Hall of Fame rider Pat Day first met Larry Snyder, the winner of more than 6,000 races who died Monday, in 1974 at Sportsman's Park. The pair rode against each other at the Chicago track, and later were rivals at Oaklawn.
"He became a great friend," Day said Tuesday. "He certainly was a rider that everybody looked up to. He was a voice for the riders, always looking out for the riders.
"Racing has lost one of the great ones. My heart goes out to his family and his many, many friends that he's garnered over the years. It's created a big void."
