Four races are in the books here at Churchill Downs on Breeders' Cup Friday and while we don't have any idea yet how the turf is playing - all races so far have been on the main track - we can say with certainty that the main track is indeed fast, both in terms of condition and in terms of fractions yielded.
Maiden 2-year-olds in the second race went a sub 22 second opening quarter mile (and that race was won in front running fashion by longshot Jack Van Berg), and 2-year-olds in the just completed Street Sense (won very nicely by the odds-on Improbable) went a sub 45 second half mile.
So far, we've seen horses win on the lead and from well off the pace, so in that regard, there is no apparent track bias. What I haven't seen is a horse win after spending the latter part of the race on or near the rail. As noted, Jack Van Berg was a front-running upsetter, but he was off the rail all the way.
This is something to keep an eye on going forward. But right now, I would prefer my horses to stay off the rail.
