Line of Duty rallied relentlessly to finish first in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday at Churchill Downs, then was officially declared the winner after stewards undertook a lengthy review of a bumping incident between him and runner-up Uncle Benny in deep stretch.
Line of Duty ($9) had a ground-saving trip until the top of the stretch, then was taken to the middle of the course to rally by jockey William Buick. Somelikeithotbrown, who had led from the start, was still in front, with Uncle Benny rallying between them. None of them kept a straight course. Somelikeithotbrown drifted out, Uncle Benny -- who was zig-zapping in upper stretch -- moved away from Somelikeithotbrown, and then just a jump or two before the wire Line of Duty and Uncle Benny came together.
Line of Duty appeared to be going the better of the two at the time of the incident. He wound up finishing first by a half-length, with Uncle Benny a neck in front of Somelikeithotbrown. Arthur Kitt was another 1 3/4 lengths farther back in fourth.
Line of Duty covered one mile on a course officially rated good -- but playing much slower -- in 1:40.06. Somelikeithotbrown led through fractions of 24.40 seconds, 48.46 seconds, and 1:13.60.
Charlie Appleby trains Line of Duty for Godolphin Racing. Line of Duty, by super stallion Galileo, has now won three times in five starts.
Line of Duty was second in his first two starts, but has now won three straight. Though based in Great Britain, where he made his first three starts, he won a Group 3 in France in his final prep for the Breeders' Cup, which was his first start in North America.
