SHAMROCK ROSE got Saturday's Breeders' Cup program off to a rollicking start when rallying from last midway on the turn under Irad Ortiz jr. to upset the $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint at odds of 25-1 for trainer Mark Casse. Fellow longshots Chalon and Anonymity finished second and third respectively, just a head and neck behind the winner with the odds on Marley's Freedom a disappointing fourth after a wide trip.
Shamrock Rose, a daughter of First Dude, came into the Filly and Mare Sprint on a three race win streak that included a victory in the Grade 2 Raven Run just two weeks earlier at Keeneland. Trailing the field for the opening half-mile of the seven furlong dash,Shamrock Rose began to improve position approaching the stretch, came between horses finding ample room to continue her bid down the lane before wearing down Chalon in the final strides. Chalon advanced from off the rapid early pace set by Selcourt to open a clear lead at mid-stretch and just failed to last. Marley's Freedom was forced extremely wide with her bid leaving the turn, rallying belatedly outside the top trio only to fall short at the end.
Shamrock Rose, one of only three 3-year-old fillies in the field and facing older horses for the first time, completed the distance in 1:23.13 over a fast track and paid $53.80.
